Travel Insurance Explained

What is travel insurance?

Travel Insurance covers medical expenses, trip cancellations or delays, lost or stolen baggage and personal liability while you are travelling. There are various different types of cover available depending on the activities you will be doing and the length of your trip. You will also need different cover depending if you need cover for a single trip, multiple trips, backtracking or cruises.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Accidents do happen and things can go wrong while you are away which can lead to costly bills. Travel insurance is there for peace of mind so that if this does happen then you are properly covered.

Almost 1 in 4 people don’t take out travel insurance for their holidays. However, they probably should have, when you consider that travel insurance paid out £370m in 591,000 claims last year, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI)

If you have pre-existing medical conditions as well it is very important to declare these otherwise it could make it difficult to make a claim.

Tips when claiming on your travel insurance

  • Report lost or stolen belongings to the local police station within 24 hours of them going missing. If this isn’t possible tell someone else such as your tour rep, hotel manager or transport provider and get a written report. Make sure you get a reference/incident number.
  • Always take your policy number and emergency contact telephone number with you when you travel.
  • If a problem happens while you’re away, keep receipts for everything you need to buy to support your claim.
  • If possible, get your insurer to agree to medical treatment before it’s carried out.
  • Always tell your insurer about an existing health problem before you take out insurance, or you may not be covered.
